Climbing in Styria’s Thermal Spa and Volcanic Region

Styria’s thermal spa and volcanic region has had everything to offer in the way of climbing for a good few years now. There are indoor climbing opportunities, such as in Fürstenfeld’s climbing hall, and possibilities to climb outdoors, such as over the rocks leading up to the imposing Riegersburg Castle.

The natural climbing arena on Riegersburg Castle’s rocks is truly unique. A million-year-old volcanic neck can be seen rising majestically out of the rolling green hills that adorn Styria’s thermal spa and volcanic region. Riegersburg Castle was built on top of this, and its prominent position and particular basalt tuff rock ensure that climbing Riegersburg Castle’s rocks is an incredibly special experience.

You can also get your adrenaline rush high up in the treetops. Austria’s largest climbing garden is situated in a forest in Geier near Bad Waltersdorf. The high-rope course is fun for the whole family, with various well-secured stages at lofty heights between the trees.

There are also fantastic climbing opportunities indoors. In 2009 the Alpine Association’s climbing hall was opened in Fürstenfeld in 2009, and it is one of the ten largest climbing halls in Austria.
