Culinary Enjoyment in the Great Outdoors

Picnics belong to the most glorious outdoor dining experiences. This is especially true when you can leave it up to somebody else to think about what to bring.

Al-Fresco Dining

A lovely spot with fantastic views over the landscape or a softly murmuring brook, a chequered blanket and a picnic basket full to bursting with the most delicious delicacies that Styria’s thermal spa and volcanic region has to offer – all this sounds like truly unforgettable holiday times. Moments of pure joy can be found in a meadow, surrounded by nothing but untouched nature. Untouched nature can also be found in the picnic basket which contains authentic Styrian fare.

Picture this – you’re lying on the picnic blanket surrounded by vines. The sunshine caresses your back; enticing scents of the lunch are wafting up to you. You’re growing increasingly curious about what delicacies the basket contains. What will it be? “Selchwürstel” (cured herby sausages), fried breaded chicken, fine spread and homemade bread or even cake? And to drink? Pinot Blanc or Morillon, and perhaps some home-made schnapps as a digestif? It goes without saying all these delicacies come from Styria’s volcanic region!

But where should you go to experience these moments of joy? You’re truly spoilt for choice here. Perhaps you’ll sit under the thousand-year-old oak tree in Bierbaum, at Sicheldorf Pond near to Bad Radkersburg or in the vineyard at Kapfenstein Castle. Culinary tip: Don’t miss the annual wine-blossom vintners’ picnic in St. Anna am Aigen.
