You can experience the Austrian past and present through a foray along the “Schlösserstraße” (castle road), a charming adventure in any season. The old walls and ruins of those tremendous buildings are venerable witnesses of a great past!
An exploratory trip through Styria is always a trip into the past because there is no other region in Austria that can pride itself on an equal number of palaces and castles. All in all, the Castle Route comprises 35 palaces and castles in Styria, Burgenland and Slovenia. The most famous example is the impressive Riegersburg Castle, which for a long time was known as the most powerful fortress of Christianity. Or places like Herberstein Palace with its wildlife park, Schlosshotel Obermayerhofen, Schloss Kornberg or Schloss Kapfenstein to name but a few. Many of these witnesses or the past make a dignified setting for various events and exhibitions today.
In addition to the Castle Route, a number of other theme routes can be explored by visitors. The wine routes wind their way past romantic vineyards. On the apple route you will be immersed into a sea of apple blossoms during spring time and in autumn you will appreciate the smell of ripe fruits. On the flower route you will get to admire the most beautiful floral villages of Europe.
