Geo-Trail Kapfenstein
OpenDuring this time, more than 40 volcanoes erupted in the thermal and volcanic land. For a long time the region was characterized by fire, ash and smoke. The Kapfenstein volcano is one of these volcanoes. It was formed by numerous eruptions, when the rising magma came into contact with the groundwater and volcanic ash was thrown kilometers into the air by violent steam explosions. Along this hiking trail, you will learn everything worth knowing about the formation of southeastern Styria with its volcanic landscape.

More information
At 11 stations, the formation of the volcano and its surroundings is explained. Through 3 special telescopes you can even take a look into the past. An old network of trails and paths is made accessible to the public again through the Geo-Trail. The trails not only allow visitors to walk through the volcano, but also lead them through a beautiful landscape of the volcano.
The starting point of the Geo-Trail is at the Winkler-Hermaden winery, from there we walk in the direction of the church, where there is a station where we can look back into the past. Past the church we walk along the volcanic cone into the mixed forest. Here we will find several stations that will give us an understanding of the history of the volcano's origin. After about half the distance you will reach the Sacred Heart Chapel, near it there are more stations and "glimpses into the past". Along the green meadows we hike the volcanic cone and soon reach Kapfenstein Castle and thus also the starting point of the hike.
