Waldheimat round, Birkfeld - Fischbach

Open
The tour leads from Birkfeld up to the flower village of Fischbach, with views far beyond the Sommeralm or the Fischbach Alps. You then return along the Feistritztal cycle path.
The learned Styrian knows it immediately: the Waldheimat is the much-described home of the great Styrian poet Peter Rosegger. This Joglland-Waldheimat cycle tour leads from Birkfeld, the economic center of Joglland, up to Fischbach, the flower and mountain spa town at the foot of the Teufelstein. The route leads up to Fischbach via the Piregg mountain trail and along the Waisenbach stream through the wild and romantic Elmleiten. After enjoying the culinary delights of the Fischbach innkeepers, the route fortunately only leads downhill and along the beautiful Feistritztal cycle path back to Birkfeld.

The tour is suitable for normal trekking bikes, even if parts of the route (Elmleiten/Feistritztalradweg) are not asphalted.

Turn left at the Shell petrol station and cycle up to the crossroads. At the crossroads (Weizer Straße/B72) we turn right and cycle through the village of Birkfeld, past the town hall, to the traffic circle. We leave the traffic circle at the 2nd exit and continue along "Kaiserfeldgasse" until we reach BIPA/Autohaus Felber. We turn right and drive out into Gasener Straße until the "Piregg/Laurentziberg" junction. Here we turn right into "Esserkreuzstraße" and ride through the newly built district. At the next crossroads (crossroads!) we continue straight on. The ascent is now behind us and we are rewarded with views of the Sommeralm area, the Fischbach Alps and back to Birkfeld. At the "Birkfeld/Waisenegg" junction, we keep right and ride down the road to the bridge over the Waisenbach. We turn left and now head in the direction of "Elmleiten/Fischbach".Passing the GH Hamerlschmied inn and accompanied by the Waisenbach stream, we now ride out the "Elmleiten", a wild and romantic valley. At the bridge, we leave the asphalt road and continue along the well-surfaced path.At the junction with the main road, we turn left downhill onto the narrow cycle path.We have now reached Fischbach and cycle past the Teufelsteinsaal and the parish church to the village center. We cycle back to the elementary school/Teufelsteinsaal and turn left there in the direction of "Krieglach/Ratten" or the "Zubringer R8" markings = start in FischbachNow it's a nice downhill section, we stay on the "Schindergrabenweg" down to the Feistritz/B72.At the junction, we keep right and join the R8/Feistritztalradweg.We now cycle along the R8 for almost 12 kilometers back to the B72/railway station in Birkfeld.

The Felber pastry shop in the center of Birkfeld is known far and wide for the finest cakes and tarts, but also for the chocolate from its own production.
